Whats the use of protest, or does anyone care?

General

As much as I am pro clean energy sources and a clean environment, as much as I am against landscape polluting by building these huge windmills and pylons. There has to be a better way right? One day after the protest at Sherrifmuir I found the following report...

A report by the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) claims that 6,000 megawatts of wind power capacity will have been installed in the UK by 2010, generating almost 5 per cent of UK electricity supply - much of it located at wind farms in Scotland. That figure is said to be 50% more than previously predicted - despite the lengthy planning delays which usually occur due to protests and enquiries, with final decisions being made in Edinburgh by the Scottish Executive. Present wind farms and plans which have gained final approval amount to a total of 3,000MW confirmed for delivery by 2010. New research identifies a further 3,000MW that is forecast to be approved and built by 2010

I think we all to a certain extent do care, however we have to consider what we are at times protesting! On the 1st of April the protest at Sheriffmuir was specifically against taking the proposed pylons through the battlesite. Another protest probably took place in the Cairngorms park... and of course there have been various protests against the building of windfarms! One thing that these protests do not supply is the answer to the problem - they just don't want what is being proposed at that time or place! Electricity has to be generated... and it needs to be transported from the source to wherever its going to be used! So, ask yourself first of all, what is the best way to produce that energy? Once you have an answer to that think of another method you don't think is good and write down the pros and cons of each - chances are the pros of one will be the cons of the other and vice versa! Then once you have done that you have to start thinking of the problem of carrying whatever electricity you have produced to where it is going to be used! Of course the most obvious place will be the areas of highest populations... is it really fair that areas of natural, generally unspoiled, beauty are ruined? Whats the alternative? At the end of the day, its that alternative we need to know!
